Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division (I)

Commission on Colloid and Surface Chemistry including Catalysis (I.6)

This commission was discontinued in December 2001.
The work of the Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division is now organized as projects.

Terms of reference:

    • to encourage and promote the use of standard conventions and terminology in the field of physical chemistry and in particular in the fields of colloid and surface chemistry and catalysis,
    • to provide recommendations for experimental procedures in the fields of colloid and surface chemistry and catalysis, and
    • to stimulate the use of colloid and surface chemistry including catalysis in more applied fields of science, such as, for instance, environmental chemistry.

These objectives are achieved through recommendation reports, technical reports and workshops on new topics related to Colloids, Surfaces and Catalysis. The different tasks can be grouped under the headings:
Standardized Nomenclature and Methods,
Advanced Materials,
Environmental Protection.

Projects of the Nomenclature and Methods group often also belong to the category of Advanced Materials. The intention of projects on Environmental Protection is to provide an interaction platform where chemists in colloid and surface chemistry and catalysis can meet specialists in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development.

Commission I.6 has two sub-committees:

Subcommittee on Advanced Materials: Colloid, Surface and Catalytic Aspects
Prof. R. A. Schoonheydt, Chairman

Subcommittee on Environmental Protection: Colloid, Surface and Catalytic Aspects
Prof. L. K. Koopal, Chairman

The Commission welcomes comments and suggestions about its work. In particular in relation to the current and preliminary projects. Suggestions that certain areas within the mandate of the Commission are in need of recommendations, or nomenclature, help us to direct our work.
