Information on the 42nd IUPAC General Assembly is now available; the GA
will be held 9-17 August 2003, in Ottawa, Canada, concurrently with the
39th IUPAC Congress.
The Preliminary Program of the Congress -Chemistry at the interface- is
online at <http://www.iupac2003.org/>; and a copy is being mailed with
the November issue of Chemistry International.
Finally, do not forget that travel assistance is available to help young
chemists attend this event; applications from candidates under age 40
are welcomed, and scientists from academia, government or industry may

* IUPAC Strategic Plan -- 2002-2003

The initial IUPAC Strategic Plan was revised slightly in 2000, and
revised more extensively this year. A Vision Statement has been added,
which is useful in communicating the essence of the Union's "raison
d'être". The Mission Statement has been expanded to answer the Who, Why,
What and How questions surrounding IUPAC and its functions. The
Long-Range Goals have been streamlined and consolidated to six
statements.

* Heterocyclic Chemistry
This publication resulting from the 3rd Florida Heterocyclic Conference
(Gainesville, Florida, USA from 6—8 March 2002) covers extensive
industrial themes, including the discovery and development of new drugs
for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, HIV treatment, and dopamine
agonists. Other topics -among many- include cascade reactions for
heterocyclic synthesis, alkaloid synthesis, heterocyclic synthesis using
metal carbene complexes, fluorous techniques in organic synthesis,
synthesis of novel heterocycles, synthesis of cyclic azomethine imines,
and heterocyclic synthesis using organoboron compounds.

* Carotenoids
While the emphasis of the 13th International Carotenoid Society
Symposium held in Honolulu, Hawaii, 6-11 January 2002, was indeed on
human health, the role of chemists in devising new methods for the
commercial synthesis of carotenoids and in understanding carotenoid
chemistry, especially as pertains to photochemical and free-radical
reactions, was not forgotten. These contributions are reflected in
several of the papers published in this issue of PAC.

* Nanostructured Advanced Materials
A second issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry has been entirely devoted
to this emerging interdisciplinary field in which hitherto unimagined
new opportunities for future development and exploitation of molecular
structure and properties are under investigation. This issue of reviews
and research papers is based on lectures presented at the 2nd IUPAC
Workshop on Advanced materials (WAMII), Bangalore, India, 13-16 Feb
2002. It was coordinated by Prof. J. Bull, IUPAC Special Topics Editor,
and Prof. G.U. Kulkarni, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee.

* Ionic Polymerization
The International Symposium on Ionic Polymerization (IP'01) - the fourth
in the series- was held in Crete, Greece, in October 2001. The concerted
efforts of a group of brave scientists, working in anionic, cationic,
and ring-opening polymerizations converted these separated meetings into
a chain of Symposia unifying all fields of ionic polymerizations. Most
of the invited lectures and selected papers are compiled in this issue
of Macromolecular Symposia.

* Macromolecular - Metal Complexes
This publication is the result of technical contributions to the 9th
International Symposium on Macromolecule-Metal Complexes (MMC-9)
sponsored by IUPAC, the Polymer Division of the American Chemical
Society (POLY, ACS) and Polytechnic University. Thematically, the book
is organized according to the topical conferences of the symposium. The
symposium focused on the role of metal ions, complexes and metallic
clusters in macromolecular systems wherein the polymeric materials were
either natural or synthetic organic, or synthetic inorganic, and
addressed new directions such as supramolecular assemblies, bio-related

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2003 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage
outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.
The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the
general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word
essay.
Deadline: February 1, 2003 - for entrants who receive their Ph.D. (or
equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2002.

* CHF's academic-year Fellowships for 2003-2004
The Chemical Heritage Foundation plays host to scholars from all parts
of the world through its fellowship and travel grant programs. Through
the Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry, CHF administers several
different fellowships for both the academic year and the summer.
Research Travel Grants are also available for scholars who want to visit
for a shorter term. - Application deadline extended to 15 January 2003!
