* IUPAC in Torino
Information on the 44th IUPAC General Assembly is available at
<http://www.iupac.org/symposia/conferences/ga07>.
The GA will be held 4-12 August 2007, in Tornio, Italy, concurrently with the 41st IUPAC Congress.
Please do remember that participation in the GA is restricted to members of IUPAC bodies and invited observers. Registration is free, but required. When applicable, a Claim Form will only be sent on receipt of a completed Participation Questionnaire. Participation Questionnaire must reach the IUPAC Secretariat no later than 31 March 2007. Thank you for your cooperation!

The program of the 2007 Congress -Chemistry Protecting Health, Natural Environment, and Cultural Heritage- is online at <www.iupac2007.org>.
For travel assistance (only for chemists under 40 - sorry!), see

* New Company Associates
In recent months, the following companies have joined IUPAC through the Company Associates program:
- Bristol-Myers Squibb, Co. (USA)
- Kazan State Technological University (Russia)
- Kuwait Oil Company (Kuwait)
- Lubrizol Corporation (USA)
- Pall Life Sciences (USA)
- Stirol Ltd. (Ukraine)
- Trace Element - Institute for UNESCO (Int. Organization)
The Company Associates program offers a mechanism, in particular through COCI, which represents industrial interests around the world, whereby industry may have a voice on IUPAC's policy and direction.

* IUPAC Poster Prizes
In 2006, 15 conferences and 13 National Adhering Organizations awarded more than 60 poster prizes. The Prizes recognize outstanding poster presentations at IUPAC Congresses and Division-sponsored conferences. In addition, on request of a NAO, prizes may also be awarded at a single chosen national conference each year.
The complete listing of 2006 IUPAC Poster Prizes Recipients is available online at <http://www.iupac.org/news/archives/2006/2006PosterPrizes.html>.
Events when prizes might be awarded are flagged in the calendar pages:

* Samsung Total Petrochemical Co., Ltd. donates USD 25 000
Samsung Total Petrochemical Co., Ltd. of South Korea (Mr. Hong-Sik Ko, President) has recently donated USD 25 000 to the IUPAC Polymer Division (Prof. Jung-Il Jin, Division President). The donation will be added to the Samsung Total Petrochemical Company Endowment fund that was originally funded with a USD 125 000 donation from Samsung in 2003.

* Environmental Colloids and Particles: Behaviour, Separation and Characterisation
Wilkinson, K. and Lead, J.
This book -Volume 10 in the Series on Analytical and Physical Chemistry of Environmental Systems- presents the current knowledge of environmental colloids and includes reviews of the current understanding of structure, role and behaviour of environmental colloids and particles, whilst focusing directly on aquatic systems and soils.
<http://www.iupac.org/publications/books/author/wilkinson.html>

* Combining and Reporting Analytical Results
Fajgelj, A.; Belli, M. and Sansone, U.
This book provides an overview of current practices on calculating, combining and reporting sets of measurement results, including their associated measurement uncertainty and deals with the concept of metrological traceability in different measurement fields, thus enabling the reader to better understand specifics and quality of his/her own measurement results.
<http://www.iupac.org/publications/books/author/fajgelj_2006.html>

* Photochemistry
The Dec 2006 issue of PAC offers a representative collection of papers, based upon plenary and invited lectures presented at the XXIst IUPAC Symposium on Photochemistry held on 2-7 April 2006 in Kyoto, Japan. The collection includes the presentation of the two Porter Medals awarded at Symposium. One Medal was awarded to Howard E. Zimmerman (University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA) to recognize his outstanding achievements and as one of the founders of modern organic photochemistry whose lifetime's work has contributed to our understanding of fundamental processes in excited states. A second Medal was awarded to Prof. Hiroshi Masuhara (Osaka University, Japan) for his pioneering work on the integration of time and spatially resolved measurements on the emerging fields of nanosciences. As a whole, this issue covered traditional as well as modern photochemistry, and discussed the science as well as related technologies such as materials for photonics, nanotechnology, and photobiology. This demonstrates the broadening scope of photochemistry from an initial central core toward a periphery that is increasingly interactive and interdisciplinary.

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - Special PAC topic articles featuring the 2006 Winners
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists encourages young scientists throughout the world to compete in an annual competition that requires candidates to submit short essays based upon the topic of their Ph.D. studies. Starting in 2002, prizewinners have been invited to submit manuscripts on aspects of their research topics for consideration as short, critical review articles to be published in Pure and Applied Chemistry. Following peer review, the most recent series of articles was published in the January 2007 issue of PAC and includes the following critical reviews:
- 'Supramolecular photochemistry in zeolites: From catalysts to sunscreens', by Michelle N. Chrétien
- 'Order and dynamics of rod-like and banana-shaped liquid crystals by 2H NMR', by Valentina Domenici
- 'Amide-based molecular shuttles (2001-2006)', by José Berná, Giovanni Bottari, David A. Leigh, and Emilio M. Pérez
- 'Synthesis and properties of germanium nanowires', by Dunwei Wang
Pure Appl. Chem. Vol. 79, No. 1, pp. 1-65 (2007)

-- Use DOIs instead!

As you might have noticed, each PAC article is being assigned a DOI. Online and in print that number appears below the reference in the top right corner.
Therefore, practically, instead of linking to
http://www.iupac.org/publications/pac/2007/7901/7901x0087.html
we can link to this abstract by appending the DOI string to http://dx.doi.org/ ; making with this example, the following URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.1351/pac200779010087

IUPAC is participating in CrossRef: <http://www.crossref.org/>
By joining this collaborative network, IUPAC is augmenting access to PAC material through incoming links from other publishers.
