* IUPAC-Samsung Education Prize for 2005

In August 2005, the IUPAC-Samsung Education Prize was awarded to the Postgraduate Course in Polymer Science organized by Professor Pavel Kratochvil at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The postgraduate course in polymer science was awarded 5000 USD to continue their education efforts on behalf of the Polymer Division and Samsung Total Petrochemical Company.

The Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague has offered the Postgraduate Course in Polymer Science since 1996. The course, organized under the auspices of UNESCO and IUPAC, is intended primarily for young scientists with a Masters or Ph.D. degree in polymer science or a related discipline, who are from countries with limited facilities for research. The course lasts 10 months and includes lectures on modern polymer science, the basics of chemical English, and the principles of macromolecular nomenclature according to IUPAC recommendations. The results of the student's research projects are published in international technical journals and presented at technical meetings.

This prize is made possible by a donation from Samsung Total Petrochemical Co. Ltd. of South Korea.

* IUPAC Council Approves New National Adhering Organizations

At the 43rd Meeting of the IUPAC Council, four organizations were granted National Adhering Organization status. These organizations are The Caribbean Academy of Sciences - Jamaica Chapter; The Jordanian Chemical Society; The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; and The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
National Adhering Organizations are the formal Members of the Union, which represent the chemists in those countries. An Adhering Organization may be a national chemical council, a national society representing chemistry, a national academy of science, or any other institution or association of institutions representative of national chemical interests.

* Pure and Applied Chemistry: Special Topic Issue on Organic Synthesis

The July 2005 issue of IUPAC's official journal, Pure and Applied Chemistry, is devoted to the scientific proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Organic Synthesis, offering readers in-depth coverage of this interesting topic. The conference was held in Nagoya, Japan, 1-6 August 2004 under the leadership of Prof. M. Isobe (Nagoya University) and Prof. Hisashi Yamamoto (University of Chicago). This special topic issue captures the vitality and ongoing promise of organic synthesis, and offers readers an opportunity to participate vicariously in another milestone in its advancement.

* Thieme-IUPAC Prize 2006 - Call for Nominations

The call for nominations for the next Thieme-IUPAC Prize is currently open. The deadline for nominations is 9 December 2005.
The Thieme-IUPAC Prize is awarded every two years at IUPAC's International Conference on Organic Synthesis (ICOS) to a scientist less than 40 years of age, whose research has had a major impact on the field of synthetic organic chemistry. The 2006 ICOS will be held in Mérida, México, 11-15 June. The Prize is sponsored jointly by Georg Thieme Verlag, IUPAC, and the Editors of Synthesis, Synlett, Science of Synthesis, and Houben-Weyl.

* IUPAC Company Associate Program

The IUPAC Company Associates Program offers a mechanism whereby industry may have a voice on IUPAC's policy and direction. Nearly 100 companies around the world have joined the program and work with IUPAC's Committee on Chemistry and Industry to accomplish goals such as:

· Bringing sound scientific judgment to decision-making in government agencies and NGOs
· Creating a platform for ensuring the public acceptance of chemistry
· Contributing to capacity-building and sustainable development by providing training in critical areas, such as safety and toxicology,
· Helping ensure a continuing supply of well-trained, internationally mobile chemists.

Company Associates receive benefits such as: promoting professional development by getting staff involved in IUPAC projects and activities, the ability to contribute to the public debate on chemicals, assisting with improving public appreciation of chemistry, and influencing priorities for IUPAC funding of projects of interest to industry. Company Associates also help to ensure that the chemical sciences continue to make significant contributions to the modern world. If your company is interested in becoming a Company Associate, please contact the IUPAC Secretariat: [email protected].
