Project

Organic Chemistry Division (III)

Number: 310/28/98

Title: Nomenclature in the 21st Century

Coordinator(s): J -C. Richer and A. McNaught

Completion Date: 2000 - completed

Objective:
The object of this project was to establish future needs for organic chemical nomenclature, by means of a survey of nomenclature users.

Progress:
During the autumn of 1998 we distributed a request for comment on future nomenclature requirements to suitable internet discussion groups, nomenclature committees, journal editors and ChemWeb members, and also published the request as a letter in chemistry news journals. This document entitled "IUPAC seeks advice on organic nomenclature development" has been posted on the Union website at http://www.iupac.org/divisions/III/news1.html

During the period October 1998 to January 1999, 139 replies were received, from respondents in 39 different countries.

The results of the survey were compiled into a report which let the working party to formulate some recommendations.
The report was part of the round table discussion on "Representations of Molecular Structure: Nomenclature and its Alternatives" organized in Washington, DC on March 10-11, 2000.
