Completion Date: 2006 - project completed

Objective:
To evaluate the structure-property correlations between the chemical structure and the rheological and physical properties of the cyclic olefin copolymers.

Description:
The modification of the general purpose polyolefin materials to enhance the performance characteristics to the level of engineering plastics is currently a hot topic of industrial as well as academic research. The copolymerization of ethylene with cyclic olefin monomers produces high Tg, optically clear, low shrinkage, low moisture absorption, and low birefringence materials. They are currently being produced by Mitsui Petrochemical, Hoechst Celanese, Japan Synthetic Rubber, and Nippon Zeon Co. and are applied as packaging materials, plastic lenz and new substrate for the compact disk and other optical storage media. The processing of cyclic olefin copolymers is rather difficult and the relation between the rheological properties and the chemical structure should be well established. The incorporation of polar monomers such as acrylates during the copolymerization is sometimes employed to improve the adhesion properties. The surface characteristics with the inclusion of the polar monomers is also an area to be analyzed. The aim of this research is to evaluate structure-property relations of the recently commercialized cyclic olefin copolymers by the structure analysis, rheological measurement, surface characterization and property estimation.

The experimental works have been completed, and the following outcomes published/ prepared for publication:
