The science of surface chemistry has as its aim the characterization of solid surfaces at the atomic level and the fundamental understanding of surface phenomena, including catalysis. The development of new physical and computational techniques have enabled rapid growth in the field and the science of interfacial interactions is one of the emerging areas of chemistry.
