Preface

The 2002 IUPAC World Polymer Congress (The 39th International Symposium on Macromolecules) organized by the Polymer Division, Chinese Chemical Society was held in Beijing, China from July 7-12, 2002. Around one thousand and three hundred attendants from 44 countries and regions actively participated in the various activities of the Congress at the beginning of the new century.

The scientific program of the Congress involved plenary sessions and the following eight scientific sessions:

1. Polymer Synthesis and Reactions
2. Structure and Properties of Polymers
3. Macromolecular Architecture
4. Polymer Blends and Composites
5. Functional Polymers
6. Bio-Related and Medical Polymers
7. Polymers and Environment
8. Polymer Engineering and Processing

The conference covered all the main fields of polymer science and technology. There were a total of 1072 papers delivered at the Congress including 380 oral and 692 poster presentation, which comprehensively reflected the achievements and progress in all important aspects of polymer science and technology and the various opportunities ahead of us. This issue contains some of the plenary lectures and invited lectures presented at the Congress.

I would like, on behalf of the Organizing Committee of the 2002 IUPAC World Polymer Congress and the Polymer Division, Chinese Chemical Society, to express our sincere thanks to the plenary and invited lecturers and all of the contributors and attendees for their important presentations and active participation.
