Preface
The 4th Florida Heterocyclic Conference was held at the University of
Florida in Gainesville, Florida, USA from 1012 March 2003. About
170 out-of-town participants were treated to a plethora of fascinating
chemistry presented by 12 plenary lecturers.
Three contributions were presented by industrial chemists: (i) M. Butters
(AstraZeneca, Process R&D, Bristol, England) described the process
development of Voriconazole (broad-spectrum antifungal agent) along
with Rosuvastatin (LDL cholesterol-lowering agent); (ii) J. Marcoux
(Merck, Rahway, NJ) covered the development of carbo- and heterocyclizations
with applications to a practical synthesis of the Cox-2 specific inhibitor
Etoricoxib; (iii) S. von Unge (AstraZeneca R&D, Molndal, Sweden)
dealt with the chemical development of Nexium, the purple pill
for heartburn relief.
Other plenary lecturers included J. Bakke (Norwegian University of
Trondheim, Norway) on the synthesis and reactions of nitropyridines;
S. Blechert (Technische Universitat, Berlin, Germany) on domino methathesis
reactions; G. Gribble (Dartmouth College, USA) on the synthesis of heterocycles
from indoles; R. Grubbs (California Institute of Technology, USA) on
metal alkylidene complexes for the rapid synthesis of olefins; S. Hecht
(University of Virginia, USA) on the synthesis of bleomycin libraries;
Norbert de Kimpe (Ghent University, Belgium) on the use of 3-halo-1-azaallylic
anions in heterocyclic synthesis; S. Kobayashi (University of Tokyo,
Japan) on efficient catalysis for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds;
G.S.R. Subba Rao (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India) on
applications of Birch reduction products in the total synthesis of natural
products; and M. Yus (Universidad de Alicante, Spain) on reductive openings
of heterocycles as a versatile route to functionalized organo- lithium
compounds.
The conference also included a full-day short course on the fundamentals
of heterocyclic chemistry and a poster session with some 30 contributions.
The Florida Heterocyclic Conference supports Arkivoc (Archive for Organic
Chemistry), a free on-line refereed journal covering all aspects of
organic chemistry, which is available at <http://www.arkat-usa.org>.
The 5th Florida Heterocyclic Conference will be held in Gainesville,
Florida from 710 March 2004.
