Nomenclature for Chromatography
(IUPAC Recommmendations 1993)

This publication up-dated and revised the Nomenclature for
Chromatography which was published in 1974. Since then there has been
considerable development in gas chromatography with the widespread introduction
of capillary columns, almost the entire development of high-performance
liquid chromatography in its many forms and the introduction of specialised
techniques such as coupled chromatography, supercritical fluid and ion
chromatography. The Nomenclature covers primarily gas and liquid chromatography
and both planar and column systems.
It contains sections on :
- General terminology
- Terms related to the chromatographic system
- Terms related to the chromatographic process and the theory of chromatography
- Terms related to detection
- Special terminology used in ion-exchange chromatography
- Special terminology used in exclusion chromatography and extensive
indexes of terms and symbols
Noticeable changes from previous practice include the use
of retention factor k instead of capacity factor k'. The
use of N for efficiency, H for plate height and h
for reduced plate height have standardised a confused area. These recommendations
have now been adopted by the majority of journals publishing papers on
chromatography.
Summary descriptions have appeared in a number of Journals
including LC-GC and Chromatographia and the full paper has been translated
into a number of languages, including most recently Polish.
