In his welcome address last month at the IUPAC World Chemistry Congress,
and also during a meeting of the General Assembly, Prof. R.G. Gilbert
recalled his own personal experience of having attended -as a young
chemist
- the previous IUPAC Congress held in Australia in 1969. The
congress gave him not only the opportunity to present his work, but also
to discuss it with senior chemists from around the world. This year at
the IUPAC Congress, for the first time, IUPAC presented the Prize for
Young Chemists, to the nine winners of the 2000 and 2001 competitions.
It was for me a great pleasure, and I am sure for you as well, to meet
all of them in Brisbane. One can hope we will see them around, maybe in
17 years -that is the actual time it took Prof. Gilbert to come back to
IUPAC- and hopefully sooner. Thinking ahead, let me remind you that the
deadline for the 2002 applications is 1 February 2002. Please do make
sure that the young chemists around you know about it!

While at the Secretariat we are catching up with the after GA effect, we
are also planning for the preparation of the next edition of the IUPAC
Handbook. As a rule, consider that if it is not on the website, we might
simply not know about it ... that includes update on projects,
publications, member contact information, etc. As I said before the
accuracy of the website contents depends on you. Just let me know what
needs attention.

* Solubility phenomena
The 9th IUPAC International Symposium on Solubility Phenomena (9th ISSP,
Hammamet, Tunisia, 25-28 July 2000) provided a focus for discussion of
new developments, particularly emphasizing environmental chemistry,
medical issues, waste processing, salt industries. Traditional issues
covered were thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of solubility equilibria,
and compilation, evaluation, electronic dissemination, and application
of solubility data.
Selected lectures are published in Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 73, No. 5, pp.
761–844.
