COMMISSION ON MICROCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES AND TRACE ANALYSIS
(V.2)
Number: 520/22/95
Title: Enhancement of Environmental Analytical Laboratories
in Developing Countries
Coordinator(s): W.P. Cofino and L.B. Reutergardh
Completion Date: 1999 - project abandoned
Objective:
Several members of the Commission are or have been
involved in supporting environmental analytical laboratories (Thailand,
India, Philippines, Central and Eastern European Countries). It is noted
that in all countries many unreliable data are produced. Problems can
be traced back to the design of the laboratory and laboratory operation,
quality of facilities, quality of equipment and chemicals, training
of staff, investment strategies (e.g. purchase of equipment but no funding
for consumables) and working practices. In addition, safety measures
are not in place or not adhered to. The project has the objective to
enhance overall laboratory performance including safety issues with
regard to environmental analyses. To achieve this objective, a critical
review scrutinizing needs and means to design, implement and maintain
environmental analytical laboratories will be prepared. An overview
of existing training materials for laboratory staff will be compiled
with an emphasis on audio-visual and computer materials. The most efficient
way for communication of the results will be evaluated.
