Project

Analytical Chemistry Division (V)

COMMISSION ON SEPARATION METHODS IN ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (V.3)

Number: 530/9/95

Series: Mobile Phases for Liquid Chromatography

Title: Part I: Descriptive Terminology

Coordinator(s): P.A. Siskos and D.P. Nikolelis

Remarks: Collaboration with ASTM

Completion Date: 1999

Objective:
This work is part of a planned series of projects covering liquid chromatography. This analytical technique is the most widely used analytical method and is used in almost every areas of industry. It has particular importance in the pharmaceutical, food, healthcare and environmental fields and underlies much of the modern chemical industry. Although the technique has been discussed in many projects as yet little work has been done to systematize the Nomenclature in this area. The general Nomenclature for Chromatography was principally developed before liquid chromatography reached the present importance and there are considerable gaps in its coverage. This paper will included revised definitions for a number of terms related to the mobile phase in separation methods.

Progress:
Draft paper has undergone a number of revisions and has recently been circulated within the Commission in final draft form.

Project abandoned - the most important terms that were defined in this project have been incorporated in the projects 530/12/97 and 530/13/97.
