Title: Revision of terminology of separation science

Task group
Chairman:
Roger M. Smith

Members: V.A. Davankov, Jan ke Jnsson, and P. Jandera

Objective:
To revise, up-date and systematize the terminology of separation science as a unified computer readable compilation and to facilitate the future updating of the Orange and relevant terms in the Gold book.

Description:
The current terminology of separation science as presented in the Orange Book is essentially a collection of the papers published in the broad area of terminology by the analytical and clinical divisions over the last 20 years. They have not been edited since publication and include a number of duplications, contradictions and outdated or inappropriate terms. A sequence of subsequent papers has also been published or in the process of publication by Commission on Separation Methods in Analytical Chemistry (V.3) and related areas since the Orange book listings were closed.

It is proposed to review the existing Orange book terminology and those published in subsequent papers and to generate a publication in which terms are brought together in related groups so that comparisons and relationships are clear. Underlying the publication will be an electronic database of definitions of the terminology.

Following discussions with Dr McNaught and Professor Jenkins it is planned that the database will be closely related to the approach used in the electronic version of the Gold book and if at all possible will hyperlink directly to the terms held in that database so that there is only a single physical (electronic) location within IUPAC for each term. Any subsequent updating will then be reflected directly in both publications. The separation methods document will be designed for internet access and will be fully searchable.

The work may require an enabling paper in PAC to specify terms whose meaning has been altered or which are no longer recommended - a cleaning up process.

Because the new version will be a unified list, the original descriptive papers will no longer be included as such in the publication. The intention is that this version will replace the electronic version of the current Orange book chapter on separation methods and will be the basis of any future paper copy and will directly transferable to electronic publication, such as a CD.

The concept is that after approval any future terminology in this area should be designed to be directly added to the database, although supporting discussion papers could be submitted to PAC. Any terminology which has been altered, updated or superceded can then be amended directly to continuously maintain an up-to-date electronic published version.

Because of the impact of this work on other bodies contact has been made with ASTM and they have indicated their interest in maintaining coordination and agreement between their terminology and that of IUPAC. Appropriate cross links could also be included to their databases and publications.

Progress:
> Nov 2004 report update (pdf file - 11KB)

> May 2006 - Aspects of terminology for the description of peak asymmetry in chromatography are included in this project, and as a result of the merging with project 1999-044-2-500
- report update (pdf file - 12KB)

> July 2007 report update (pdf file - 6KB)
