Macromolecular Division (IV)

Number: 2001-065-1-400

Title: Short course in Polymer Characterization preceding POLYCHAR-10

Task Group
Chairman:
Witold Brostow

Completion Date: 2002

Objective:
Financial support for participants from developing countries to IUPAC Conference POLYCHAR-10 (World Forum on Polymer Application and Theory, January 8-11, 2002, and Short Course on Polymer Characterization, January 7, 2002, in Denton, Texas, U.S.A.

Description:
The World Forum on Polymer Applications and Theory (POLYCHAR) is held every year by the Laboratory of Advanced Polymers and Optimized Materials (LAPOM) at the University of North Texas in Denton. Since 2001 the Conference enjoys IUPAC support.

The Conference focus is on characterization on one hand and synthesis, processing, manufacturing and properties on the other, with emphasis on predictions of service performance. All polymer-based materials, including thermoplastics, thermosets, heterogeneous and molecular composites, blends, polymer melts and solutions are covered.

Research presentations are in both oral and poster format. Topic areas include:

  • Predictive methods
  • Polymerization
  • Polymer liquid crystals
  • Mechanical properties and performance
  • Dielectric, electrical, and magnetic properties
  • Surfaces and interfaces
  • Rheology, solutions, and processing
  • Characterization and structure-property relations
  • Recycling
  • International education and scientific information

Prizes to young investigators and students will be awarded for outstanding presentations in either the oral or poster format. There is a Short Course on Polymer Characterization (with hands-on tutorials) by thermophysical, mechanical, tribological, electrical and surface techniques one day before the Forum. The Short Course has a particular value to the participants from the developing countries as an important source of knowledge for them. The Course helps also other participants - students in particular - to understand the research papers presented during the following four days. Since 1997 the participants come from at least 40 countries each time. Manuscripts submitted during the Forum to the POLYCHAR Scientific Committee are considered for publication in Materials Research Innovations after standard refereeing.
