Back to school time
The US media, from press to radio and TV, is passing on the fever of
getting ready and set for a good start. A check-up and tune-up of this
e-news subscriber list seems to be therefore appropriate at this time of
the year. Many -more than 3000- new e-mail addresses have been added
this time, including many US affiliates.
To those who are receiving this e-news for the first time, I hope you
will find it informative.
In short, the e-news is an easy way to get informed about what's new
from IUPAC and its website. Such e-mail is sent periodically, about once
every 6 to 8 weeks, to IUPAC members, fellows and affiliates, and to
numerous contacts from IUPAC National Adhering Organizations, Associate
National Adhering Organizations, and Associated Organizations, etc. This
mailing group is however not restricted to IUPAC related individuals.

For questions regarding the list, including subscribing and
unsubscribing, please visit the e-news page at

We welcome yours suggestions, comments, questions, etc.

* Young Chemists to the 39th IUPAC Congress
<http://www.iupac.org/news/archives/2002/39thCongress-yc.html>
The next IUPAC Congress will be held August 10-15, 2003 in Ottawa,
Canada. The theme is "Chemistry at the Interfaces." To encourage young
chemists to participate in this unique congress, the organizers have
established programs to offer travel assistance. Applications from
candidates under age 40 are welcomed, and scientists from academia,
government or industry may apply. Deadline is November 30, 2002.

* Treasurer's Report
<http://www.iupac.org/news/archives/2002/treasurer-01.html>
Dr. Buxtorf discusses the financial situation of the Union and presents
some highlights, which seem of importance for the future. If there is
anything that you want to know about IUPAC accounts, revenues, expenses,
reserves, investments, etc., it is all there.
You can also read The Treasurer's column in Sep issue of Chemistry
International
.

* Advancing Worldwide Chemistry - IUPAC Biennial Report, 2000-2001
<http://www.iupac.org/news/archives/2002/report.html>
This report lists IUPAC's long-range goals and provides some
illustrations of actions taken during the last two years toward meeting
those goals.
A copy is being mailed with the Sep issue of Chemistry International.

* Science of Sweeteners
A Special Topic Issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry derives from the 2nd
International Symposium on Sweeteners, which was held on 13-17 November
2001 in Hiroshima, Japan.
The publication reflects well the panorama of subjects covered in the
symposium with respect to both fundamental aspects and the importance of
current and new research on the development of sweeteners. The topics
varied from receptor studies, to natural sweeteners, to design and
synthesis of sweeteners, to industrial applications.
Conference Editor, Mugio Nishizawa

* Bioinformatics
The 2002 International Conference on Bioinformatics held in Bangkok last
February had for its theme 'North&SHY;South Networking'. The event was
designed to be a forum where bioinformatic scientists in developing
countries could interact with their counterparts in developed countries,
as well as with biologists from various disciplines.
To further communicate their research works through publications,
several plenary speakers have chosen to publish a version of their
presentation in PAC.

* Free-Radical Polymerization: Kinetics and Mechanism
This volume includes most of the main lectures and some of the short
lectures from the IUPAC-sponsored International Symposium on
Free-Radical Polymerization: Kinetics and Mechanism (SML'01), held in
June 2001. It was the third conference in the series and the major
themes were: Fundamentals of Free-Radical Polymerization, Free-Radical
Polymerization in Supercritical Fluids, Polymer Characterization,
Polymer Reaction Engineering, Controlled Radical Polymerization, and
Polymerization in Heterogeneous Systems.

* PAC in the spotlight
According to the CAS Science Spotlight, a paper published in Pure and
Applied Chemistry
in Dec 2000 [PAC 72(12), 2275-2287] ranked number 8 of
the most requested article during the second quarter 2001. This paper
authored by K.R. Seddon, A. Stark, and M.-J. Torres and titled
"Influence of chloride, water, and organic solvents on the physical
properties of ionic liquids" found its way in the pages of PAC as one of
the plenary lectures presented at the 15th International Conference on
Physical Organic Chemistry, held in Goteborg in July 2000.

* IUPAC Empfehlungen
The German IUPAC National Adhering Organization has arranged for the
translation and publication of selected IUPAC Reports and
Recommendations in the journal Angewandte Chemie.

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2003 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage
outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.
The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the
general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word
essay.
Deadline: February 1, 2003 - for entrants who receive their Ph.D. (or
equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2002.

* An artist among us
A collection of 14 colorful scientific images prepared by Jeremy Frey is
on display near a black chalk drawing by the Italian artist Leonardo da
Vinci at one of Oxford University's colleges. (J. Frey is titular member
of the Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division and Chairman of the
Commission on Physicochemical Symbols, Terminology, and Units). As M.
Freemantle put it in his news published in the July 29, 2002 of C&EN, J.
Frey can claim that he keeps the best of company.
